LOR Tips for MBA -
A letter of recommendation (LOR) is one of the most important elements for admission into an MBA programme abroad. Besides the personal statement and academic transcripts, the admission panel of all the top business schools across the world base their decision on the recommendation letter provided by the aspirant.

In the case of MBA programmes, aspirants are asked to submit 2-3 recommendation letters as proof of their worth for the seat. Since MBA programmes usually require aspirants with work experience, the LOR for MBA tends to focus more on the technical aspects of the aspirants’ business acumen.

Here we bring you LOR tips for MBA programme as well as what to include in it.

LOR tips for MBA: Whom should you approach?

One of the biggest questions that comes to an applicant’s mind is sourcing an LOR for MBA programme -- who should be approached for recommendation? One must remember the requirements of recommendation are different in an MBA programme from LORs for MS programmes. This is because most of the MBA programmes require the aspirant to have work experience of a couple of years. In that case, the recommendations should ideally be covered by colleagues or mentors from the organization the aspirant was previously working with.  So, if a business school requires 3 letters of recommendations for MBA, you can offer two from your organization and one from a professor or academician who had previously worked with the aspirant.

The people you should ask to write your recommendation letter for MBA:

  1. Colleague

  2. Direct Manager

  3. Professor

  4. Academician under whom you  had worked or studied

  5. Professionals beyond your organization with whom you had a chance of working for a project

  6. Your partner (in case of research or business)

LOR tips for MBA: Discuss what you want to be reflected in the LOR

Once you have shortlisted your recommenders and approached them for recommending you, the next important step is to sit with them and discuss all the aspects that should be included in your LOR for MBA.  Ideally, the LOR should include the following points:

  1. About the recommender’s relationship with you- It should be made clear how well the recommender knows the applicant.

  2. The recommender’s observations about you- Make sure there are more positive elements involved here.

  3. The aspirant’s important projects- the recommender can throw light into an aspirant’s qualities by mentioning about his projects and how he handled them.

LOR tips for MBA:Show your SOP and transcripts

While you discuss about the aspects that should be included in your LOR for MBA, it is important that you show your SOP , transcripts as well as scores like GMAT or GRE to your recommender. The reason is that the points the recommender will focus on should not contradict your personal statement or your certificates. The recommender should know about requirements of the course and which qualities to highlight which would suit the programme best. In that case, there is more weightage given to the personal statement of the applicant.

a. Harry is a natural leader and is at his best in a group environment. He is proactive at getting full involvement of all other team members to derive the best results possible.

b. Alan was always an entrepreneur, and during the 5 years when we worked together, he was always initiating processes, thinking originally, changing conceptions and taking everyone along him. So when Alan came and told me he wanted to open his own company, I wasn’t surprised.

LOR tips for MBA: Support qualities with experiences

It is always helpful if the recommender can support his statements with examples. A recommendation letter for MBA is like a window into the aspirant’s capabilities through the perspective of a third person. Hence, if we are pointing about a particular quality, we should be able to substantiate the same with ample examples.  For example, if the recommender states that the aspirant has entrepreneurial qualities, he should be able to give some examples as to how the aspirant thought of new ideas to expand a business or project.

Similarly, if the recommender mentions that the aspirant has problem solving qualities, he should present situations where the aspirant has exhibited solutions to critical issues regarding a project or assignment.

a. John is a creative and original thinker and has great curiosity about people and ideas. He also has plenty of common sense that he has applied to solving many problems at (organization name). LOR tips for MBA: Focus on the chosen specialization

It always helps to frame the recommendation around the specialization the aspirant is opting for. So, if the aspirant is planning to pursue MBA in marketing, it would be helpful if the recommendation focuses on the aspects that would make the applicant a better marketing manager. The LOR can highlight about his communication abilities or his strategy making abilities. Of course, that doesn’t mean the focus should be entirely on his marketing or sales abilities. If there are points which the recommender thinks reflect other abilities or aspects of the aspirant’s qualities, they should definitely be included.
