ENTREPRENEURIAL leadership is the buzzword at Netherlands’ Nyenrode Business Universiteit (NBU). “From the beginning, Nyenrode Business Universiteit has focused on shaping managers and professionals of the future. Our education is not only about the exchange of knowledge, but also about personal development,” says Professor MiÅ¡aDžoljić, Rector Magnificus of NBU. Founded in 1946, the only private university in the Netherlands is driven by its motto ‘for and by business’.

How it all began
Albert Plesman, the founder of the Dutch airline KLM, (currently Air France-KLM), was imprisoned by the Germans during the Second World War. In the final years of the war, he and other representatives of the business community including Shell, Unilever, Philips and Akzo, took the initiative to start an institute that would rebuild the economic position of the Netherlands and Dutch enterprises after the war. Thus NBU was born in 1946. So, NBU selects candidates whose vision matches theirs and whom they believe can benefit most from their programmes. “Nyenrode’s education policy is based on a vision that knowledge should be permanently tested in practice and that personality development and learning to deal with group dynamics are vital qualities for good leaders and entrepreneurs,” informs NBU’s Dean Prof. Dr. LeenPaape.

Learning environment
Situated on a 13th century estate, education at Nyenrode is experiential. “We want you to face business as it is in real-life and develop knowledge and competencies accordingly. Therefore, the foundation of our programme includes living on campus, extra-curricular activities and intense coursework,” says Dr. André Nijhof, Program Director, Master of Science in Management.

Q. Does NBU’s curricula differ from that of other Management Schools?
A. From the beginning, NBU has focused on shaping managers and professionals of the future. Our education is not only about the exchange of knowledge, but also about personal development. Our core values are Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Stewardship. We have incorporated those three values in all our programmes.

Q. How does NBU act as a catalyst for companies and entrepreneurs?
A.  NBU was founded by Dutch companies who operate internationally. By maintaining strong connections with both larger and smaller companies in the Netherlands and abroad, NBU can shape managers and professionals for these companies. Consequently, we can act as a catalyst in the process of change often required by these companies.

Q. What is NBU’s international perspective?
A. NBU had an international focus from the very beginning. Our concept of internationalization means we should prepare our students to be internationally active in the future, whether they are from abroad or from the Netherlands. It is in the core of almost all our programmes, except perhaps for our accountancy programmes that are rather more nationally oriented.

Q. What is your revenue model?
A. It is through our degree courses, executive programmes and consultation.

Nyenrode Business Universiteit offers a number of programmes, including part-time Executive MBA, Full-time International MBA (on-campus programme for those with 3-10 years experience). It also offers Modular Executive MBAs for professionals, a Master of Science (MSc) in Management and other finance and accounting programmes.

"A business leader requires much more than acquiring state-of-the-art knowledge about business. It requires a drive for results, team-building skills and dealing with different responsibilities. That is why NBU believes that education should be experiential"

Prof. Dr LeenPaape,Prof. Dr LeenPaape,
Dean, Nyenrode Business Universiteit

"A professional needs to show some guts. They must possess a set of values and skills, making them capable of saying that although some matters might be permissible according to the letter of the law, they should be condemned in the spirit of the law"

Study trip
As part of the course you participate in an international study trip to an emerging economy where you visit companies, work on cases and follow lectures. You can choose from two kinds of study trips: one is going to Europe and the other one, outside Europe.

Internship and thesis
Typically, you have to balance between applying your academic skills and working on a real-life research problem within a company. Students team up in pairs and most thesis projects have the benefit of a business sponsor. For graduation, the thesis must be defended to a committee that includes the Nyenrode thesis supervisor, a second Nyenrode faculty reader and a representative of the company.

Why study at Neyenrode?
NBU has created an environment that is dedicated to bridging the gap between academic rigour and contemporary business knowledge. “We have close ties with our alumni, we use real cases and our programs often feature representatives from the world of business. Each program has an advisory panel with representatives from the focus group for whom the program was designed. Furthermore, people from the business community hold seats on the Foundation’s Board,” shares Prof. LeenPaape, who has been a Partner in the risk management advisory practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers for 10 years and has led many assignments involving many leading companies such as ABN AMRO, Nike, Royal Dutch Shell, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines etc.

Nyenrode network
Having a strong network and the skills to maintain it are key assets for any business leader. “Many of our 15,000 Nyenrode alumni are spread across the globe. We have alumni in more than 100 countries. Our Nyenrode Alumni Association ‘VoortgezetteCompagnie van Verre’ has over 5,500 active members. It is one of the largest and best-organized alumni associations in the Netherlands, with regional Circles in many parts of the world and theme-based Circles in the Netherlands,” informs Prof. LeenPaape.

Admission requirements
The minimum qualification to apply for MSc in Management is a Bachelor’s degree. Less than two years of work experience is an added advantage. One should have an adequate background in Mathematics and English (higher secondary education level). If your knowledge of mathematics and/or English is insufficient, Nyenrode offers special courses if you meet all other criteria.

During the selection procedure, NBU also looks at your soft skills. They are:

  • Intelligence to grasp complex concepts
  • Motivation to learn in a team-oriented environment
  • Integrity to maintain high ethical standards
  • Openness to appreciate a multicultural atmosphere

Average fee for the programme is Euro 24,000. You have the option to pay the fee in two or three instalments. Banks provide reasonable loans to people who have been accepted into the Nyenrode MSc in Management.

Revolving scholarships are offered primarily by the alumni of Nyenrode. All the scholarships are merit-based. And most of them are offered as prizes in various competitions, such as on-campus business games. You are also allowed to apply for a director’s award scholarship.

Return on investment
At least 75% of the graduates are in employment within three months of graduation. Most of them find employment in consulting, marketing & sales or start as a management trainee. Top five recruiters are: PWC, ING, CapGemini, Deloitte, and NederlandseSpoorwegen.

International ranking and accreditation
In the Financial Times’ Ranking for European Business Schools (2013), Nyenrode was given an overall position of 40 out of the top 75 business schools. In the same year, MSc in Management was given an overall position of 64 on the Financial Times’ Global Ranking for Master’s in Management. NBU is accredited by EQUIS/EFMD.

The India connect
The changing global economic and demographic scenarios have impacted the way NBU looks at its student population. “The population of Western Europe will decline in the coming years; I’m convinced that the future lies in the East. We must respond accordingly,” says Prof. LeenPaape.

International partners of Nyenrode Business Universiteit in India include S.P. Jain Institute of Management & Research (Mumbai) and IIFT, New Delhi. Other major international partners are University of Stellenbosch Business School (South Africa) and University of Oregon - Lundquist College of Business (USA).

So if you want to become a new generation business leader, Nyenrode Business Universiteit could be the starting point for you.
