Foreign Universities Campus in India:
Recent years have witnessed an increasing trend of foreign universities opening campuses in India. With the Ministry of Human Resources and UGC opening up the gates for foreign university campuses in India, we can expect many more institutes coming to the country.

Why are foreign institutes coming to India?

According to Rahul Choudaha, a foreign higher education expert, international universities are interested in coming to India with an objective of either ‘Prestige-enhancing’ or ‘Prestige-seeking’ or ‘Revenue/profit maximizing’. However, the institutes cite talent maximisation as the motive. Indian youth is welcoming specialised careers, be it fashion, animation, design, to name a few. Such options do not have established educational platforms in India. So foreign brands are coming up to recognise and polish the talent. "Video gaming is growing a lot in India. But most of the studios require game producing methodologies to bring their ideas to a worldwide level. That's why the institute decided to come to India," says Guillaume Benoit, Head of Department Game Design, DSK International Campus, Pune. At the same time, with growing international relations and more foreign companies coming to India, demand for managers that have skills and experience to work in multiple countries is rising.

MBA Program,
Schulich School of Business

"Trade between India and Canada is growing, giving rise to demand of appropriate managers. The Schulich MBA Programme in India is designed to facilitate this dramatic growth in Indo-Canada relations."

Is degree given by foreign institutes in India recognized?

Recognition of foreign institutes’ degrees in India by Indian authorities remains an issue despite global recognitions. Last year, Bhopal saw protests by students against Leeds-Metropolitan University, the first higher education campus established by a foreign university in India. Students claimed that the degrees given to them were illegal in India as this university was not authorised by the UGC to do so. Today, the institute has been merged with another university in India. So check before you take admission in any university for recognition of courses.

HimanshuHimanshu Singhal,

"ModArt offers an international bachelor's for the courses and also has tie-up with a UGC recognized university for students looking for a UGC recognized degree.”

Will foreign institutes in India send me abroad?

Many students opt for foreign institutes so as to get an opportunity to go abroad as part of curriculum. The demand is such that even Indian institutes are tying up with foreign institutes to materialize exchange programmes. Ashwin Joshi, Director, MBA Programme, Schulich School of Business, shares that in the first year students will stay in Hyderabad and faculty from Toronto will be stationed there for the term to deliver the identical classroom experience that students receive in Toronto. Students will complete Year 2 of their studies at the Toronto Campus.  Students will graduate with the Schulich MBA degree, the same degree that they receive if they did both years of the program in Toronto.

“My college gives this opportunity to students to go to SDA Bocconi’s main campus as part of exchange programme. Almost all of us are going to that campus in September for four months. There, we will have an opportunity to choose electives as well and study accordingly.”
