ETH Excellence Scholarships
The ETH Zurich offers two different programmes under the ETH Excellence Scholarship which is aimed at providing financial assistance to outstanding students both from ETH as well as to international students who wish to study Master’s programme at ETH Zurich.
The first scholarship is Excellence Scholarship and Opportunity Programme (ESOP). Under this scholarship programme, the students receive funds that cover the entire study and living costs and also a specific supervisor.
The second one is Master Scholarship Programme (MSP) in which the students receive a partial stipend and the offer of assistantship while doing the Master’s programme at ETH Zurich.
Eligibility to apply for ETH Excellence Scholarships
- The candidate must obtain admission for Master’s programme at the university
- The candidate must have excellent academic records in his/her bachelor’s
- If the candidate has already started his/her master’s programme at the university, he/she is not eligible to apply for the scholarship.
Application checklist for ETH Excellence Scholarships
- Completed application form
- Letter of motivation
- Two letters of recommendation from professors or supervisors
- A pre-proposal for Master’s thesis
Tips to write pre-proposal for Master’s thesis
The pre-proposal is one of the most important elements of the application form that decides whether the scholarship needs to be granted or not. The aim of the pre-proposal is to assess the ability of the candidate to think through a scientific process independently and come up with a research project. Keep in mind:
- Not to deviate from the topic
- Write in small paragraphs and make your pre-proposal more readable
- Explain your ideas and plan clearly in the write-up
- Avoid plagiarism. You may refer to the previous pre-proposals, but don’t copy them
Structure of pre-proposal for Master’s thesis
A title is a must in a pre-proposal. Summarize in few words, the topic and idea of proposal.
You must give a short introduction stating the goal of the proposal.
Objectives and goals
Here you can state the main research question that you want to address.
Methods of investigation and implementation
You must explain in the proposal the methods and techniques that you are planning to use in the proposal. The methods vary from course to course.
You must also list a few works that you have undertaken previously in order to prove that you are capable to carry out the task successfully.
Timetable and milestones
The duration of the project varies depending on the duration of the course. Hence, it is important to check the duration of the course that you are applying for. You must also mention the milestones that you would like to achieve during the course of time.
You must give the list of papers and publications that you have cited in the pre-proposal and materials collected for further reading.
The Excellence Award gives the award holder funds to cover living expenses and study expenses. The amount given per month is CHF 1750 per month throughout the Master’s course. The award holders will also get a tuition fee waiver. The scholarship is provided irrespective of candidate’s financial situation.
The Master Scholarship Programme provides partial stipend (CHF 850 per month for the first semester and CHF 600 per month from second semester onwards). The award holders are also eligible for a tuition fee waiver. After the first semester, the students can take on the assistantship where they will get CHF 600 per month.
How to apply for ETH Excellence Scholarships?
The university uploads the application form every autumn. The interested and eligible candidates can download the form, fill it and submit along with the supporting documents.
Selection process for ETH Excellence Scholarships
The applications for the scholarships are processed by the Admission Committees of the respective departments. The final decision of awarding the scholarship lies with the Rector of the ETH. The number of scholarships awarded each year depends on the availability of funds.
