1. Commonwealth Scholarship -New Zealand

 

If you a resident of any of the Commonwealth countries, you can apply for the Commonwealth Scholarship to undertake master’s or postgraduate engineering study in New Zealand. The scholarship seeks to address the human resource needs of developing countries and is among the popular engineering scholarships for international students in New Zealand. Commonwealth Scholarships are funded by host universities.

 

Eligibility: To be eligible for the Commonwealth Scholarship to study engineering in New Zealand, you must:

  • Be a citizen of a Commonwealth country

  • Be pursuing a postgraduate qualification:

  1. Master’s Degree (1 – 2 years)
  2. PhD (up to 3.5 years)

How to apply

The application process for a New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarship is slightly different from applying to other New Zealand scholarships. For example, each nation of the Commonwealth has its own agency for operating the scholarship. So, students planning to apply for this scholarship must get in touch with agencies in their respective countries for information.

 

Another important thing about the Commonwealth scholarship is that you cannot apply online, but instead apply using a hard copy of the scholarship form. Completed application forms must be submitted to your local Nominating Agency.

3. The University of Auckland Engineering Scholarships in New Zealand

 

Ranked 81st in the QS list of top universities in the world, the University of Auckland is also New Zealand’s top university and a firm favorite with international engineering students. Many students studying in the university also have their studies funded by engineering scholarships extended by Auckland. Now while engineering scholarships in New Zealand aren’t dime a dozen, being familiar with these scholarships helps, because you start one step ahead of your competitors.

 

A. Undergraduate Scholarships

 

If you are an entry-level and first-year student at the University of Auckland, you automatically become eligible for an engineering scholarship. Some of the scholarships that you may be considered include:


1. University of Auckland Top Achiever Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded to students with excellent academic achievement and demonstrated leadership potential.

 

Value: Students are paid $20,000 in the first year. In addition, award winners are offered a guaranteed place in a Hall of Residence.

 

Eligibility: Scholarships are offered based on merit, like the number of Excellence credits you attained at NCEA Level 2 or 3 last year, or your CIE average from last year, or your predicted score for IB for this year.


Deadline: Applications usually close by August-end.

 

How to apply: Scholarship applications can be filled and submitted online. Applications usually open around six weeks before the closing date.

 

2. University of Auckland Academic Potential Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded to academic high achievers facing financial obstacles or disadvantaged by personal circumstances.

 

Value: This particular engineering scholarship in New Zealand for international students is divided into three tiers, with scholarships ranging from $6,000 to $20,000 and is payable over three years.

 

Tier 1: $20,000 over three years with a guaranteed place in a Hall of Residence. The applicant must have minimum an NCEA rank score of 240 (equivalent to a CIE rank score of 300 or an IB predicted score of 32)

 

Tier 2: Engineering scholarships in New Zealand under this category are paid $10,000 over three years, along with a guaranteed place in a Hall of Residence. Applicant must also have NCEA rank score of 220 (equivalent to a CIE rank score of 260 or an IB predicted score of 29) or higher.

 

Tier 3: $2,000 per year for three years.

 

Eligibility: You need to have minimum NCEA rank score (obtained from study in Year 12) of 200 to be considered for this specific engineering scholarship in New Zealand for international students. Other eligibility criteria include:

  • If you are from a rural area

  • If you are a disabled person

  • If you have a refugee background

How to apply: Applications have to be completed online and open around six weeks before the closing date.

Deadline: Since there is no separate application, programme application is also scholarship deadline.

 

B. Postgraduate scholarships

Value: Award winners are extended tax-free stipend of $13,000 plus the cost of compulsory fees.

Eligibility: Admission is based on the application you submit for admission. Nevertheless, the university recommended that you have a minimum GPA of 8.0 or above.

How to apply: You don’t have to apply separately for this scholarship as applications for admission are used for the purpose.
