Engineering Management
- It has become a norm for engineers around the world to pursue management related courses. Since students are not necessarily required to have prior technical knowledge for pursuing an MBA, business schools have one of the most diverse class profiles among all subjects. It is no surprise, perhaps, that almost 36% of the MBA class for 2017 at Harvard Business School is from STEM related fields while 20% of the students in the Haas School of Business are from engineering.

But why just a traditional management degree? Couldn’t engineering graduates go for degrees specifically tailored for them? Well, the answer lies in the Master of engineering management programme or MEM.

What is Master of Engineering Management?

MEM or Master of engineering management is a professional course which combines engineering practices with business and management subjects. Basically, it is a specialised management programme which includes the application of engineering principles and techniques. The course is commonly known as the Engineer’s MBA as it is, essentially, pursued by engineers as well as scientists who want to understand and master the managerial aspects of their work.

What does Engineering Management include?

Master of Engineering Management is offered both at the masters and PHD level for engineers who want to stay put in the technological field but with a focus on managerial roles.  The programme curricula may include some of the below mentioned subjects:

  • Accounting for engineers

  • Financial issues for engineers

  • Computer simulation for risk and operations analysis

  • Technical Entrepreneurship

  • Product Development

  • Strategic Management for Engineers
