The first hurdle the study abroad aspirants need to cross is to get into a foreign university is to clear the qualifying tests- i.e., GRE, GMAT, IELTS, TOEFL or AP test. Since world-class universities set very high cut-off scores for the qualifying tests, is not that easy to obtain those scores.
One major question most of the students ask is if they need to go to coaching classes to get good scores in these qualifying tests. The answer is- it depends. For tests like IELTS and TOEFL that assess the English proficiency of the candidate, taking classes depends on the candidate’s expertise in the language. If you are confident enough that you can crack the exam with the required score, then it’s not at all necessary to take classes. However, it is very important to know the test format and the questions, especially when you are not taking any classes. Practice as much as possible with sample papers and take mock tests. The study materials are easily available online and you can download and practice them with much ease. Also use the study materials provided by the exam conducting body as it will give you a better picture about the questions.
There are some tests such as Advanced Placement Test. It is a subject based test which needs proper expert guidance. Hence, it is advisable to go for classes for such tests. Also tests like GRE and GMAT need proper guidance from experts.
However, it entirely depends on the candidate and his/her talent and confidence that decides whether a coaching class and expert guidance is needed to crack the qualifying tests.
