Admissions to Engineering programmes in India are much sought after. International students as well as children of Indians settled abroad also aspire to study engineering in India.
A scheme under the Ministry of Human Resources and Development aims to facilitate admissions for foreign nationals, PIO’s, NRI’s as well as Children of Indian Workers in Gulf to the NITs, IIITs, SPAs and other Centrally Funded & Premier Technical Institutes.
These top engineering institutions like NIT’s and IIIT’s have reserved seats for NRI’s and Children of Indians Working in Gulf (CIWG) under DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad). Under the DASA scheme, the aspirants do not have to go through the admission process that the resident aspirants go through. They are selected on the basis of their SAT scores. The total number of seats across all the courses and institutions are 2350. A total of 66 undergraduate programmes are available for NRI and CIWG candidates aspiring to pursue higher education in India. DASA for NIT’s in India is preferred by aspirants residing abroad as they do not have to go through a separate exam procedure.
According to a Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) report, about 36,605 foreign students opted to pursue undergraduate programmes in India in 2015–16. As many as 9000 of these are foreign students who are pursuing different engineering programmes in institutions across India.
