Spell check and grammar check is inevitable after completing the resume. It is always good to ask your friends or family to check the resume for these errors. Reading out aloud also helps in identifying the mistakes easily.
Lack of focus
Lack of focus is another major mistake the students commit while writing resume. It is very important to have a very sharp focus in the resume because the admissions office may not have enough time to go through the entire resume as they receive a large number of applications every year. So, the candidate must make sure that the resume talks clearly about what he/she has achieved so far and why he/she is apt for the position in the university. The points in the resume must be good enough to catch the attention of the admission committee while scanning the resume within a few minutes.
Clarity in language is as important as grammatical accuracy. It is important to write in straight and simple language rather than expressing yourself in complicated sentences. Remember, the admissions office does not have enough time to read and understand the dictionary words. Also, don’t use jargons and abbreviations that are not too common. If you use abbreviation, make sure that you explain it. Another major mistake committed by students is that creating a resume that is not tailored for the application. You must keep in mind the requirements for the particular course and the resume must be providing information according to the need. It doesn’t mean that you must make up stories in the application. Appearance of the resume is as important as the content. The admissions office rejects applications because of bad formatting and the absence of page numbers, which make the resume look totally unprofessional. You must format the resume after completing it and proof reading. Make sure that the margins are appropriate and the content is laid out properly with the use of bullets and numbering wherever necessary. The paragraphs must be separated and the new ideas must be presented under bold headings.
Overuse of italics and bold
It is very much important to format the resume with appropriate use of bold and italics. They help the reader to distinguish between ideas easily. However, it is not at all good if you overuse bold and italics as it may hinder the flow of reading.
The most common issue faced by the admissions committee is the length of the resumes they get. Mention only the relevant points in the resume and avoid minor details and irrelevant information such as hobbies etc. Provide the summary of the qualifications you obtained till date. There is no need of explaining the subjects you studied and the subject codes.
