ADB - Japan Scholarship- Established in 1988, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) - Japan Scholarship Program is a platform for talented students from developing countries to pursue postgraduate studies at select institutions in the Asian and Pacific Region.

The scholarship generally provides support to aspirants in the fields of economics, management, science and technology.

The participating institutes for ADB-Japan scholarship are located at around 10 countries and enroll around 300 students annually.

What does the ADB - Japan Scholarship cover?

The ADB - Japan Scholarship is open to only developing member countries of the Asian Development Bank. Besides, the scholarship is only available in 10 countries across the world. They are:

  1. Japan
  2. Australia
  3. India
  4. New Zealand
  5. China
  6. Thailand
  7. Pakistan
  8. Philippines
  9. USA
  10. Singapore

Not all institutes in the mentioned countries offer the ADB - Japan Scholarship. There are around 26 participating institutes across the 10 countries, which offer the scholarship. Also, in some cases the scholarship is offered only in specific departments of the scholarships.

Eligibility criteria for ADB - Japan Scholarship:

The ADB - Japan Scholarship programme has some very specific eligibility criteria. An ADB - Japan Scholarship aspirant should:

  1. Be a citizen of an ADB borrowing member
  2. Gain admission to an approved masters course at a listed participating institution.
  3. Have a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent with a strong academic record.
  4. Have at least 2 years of full-time professional working experience, after a university course, at the time of application.
  5. Be proficient in oral and written English communication skills to be able to pursue studies.
  6. Not more than 35 years old at the time of application. In exceptional cases, for programs which are appropriate for senior officials and managers, the age limit is 45 years old.
  7. Return to his/her home country after completion of studies.

Aspirants belonging to the categories mentioned below are not eligible to apply for the ADB - Japan Scholarship

  1. Applicants living or working in a country other than his/her home country are not eligible for scholarships.
  2. Applicants who are already enrolled in graduate degree programs.
  3. Applicants for Undergraduate studies, distance learning programs, short-term training, conferences, seminars, thesis writing, and research projects.
  4. Executive Directors, Alternate Directors, management and staff of ADB, consultants, and relatives of the aforementioned are not eligible for the Scholarship
  5. Staff of the JSP designated institutions are not eligible to apply to their own institution.

What does the scholarship cover?

The ADB - Japan Scholarship programme covers the following expenses of a student

  • Full-tuition fees
  • A monthly subsistence and housing allowance
  • An allowance for books and instructional materials
  • Medical insurance
  • Travel expenses

When and how to apply

Aspirants can get the application forms for the ADB - Japan Scholarship from the respective participating institutions they applyto. At the time of application the applicant has to indicate his/her willingness to be considered for the ADB - Japan Scholarship.

Aspirants are required to file their family income at the time of application.
